Beavers Cubs Scouts

Echo Colony

Wednesdays during term time from 6.15pm – 7.30pm

To distinguish the 12th Beaver Colonies we have taken the names of our mascots, therefore Wednesday group are now known as Echo Colony, after Echo the Beaver.

With 236 Activity badges, 26 challenge Badges and Six Bronze awards from 34 members this year has been a busy one full of fun and adventure.

Eleven members have moved on to Cubs in various groups not just 12th, and we have welcomed 15 new recruits. Currently bursting at the seams with 28 members on the books regularly seeing 24 and with three leaders we try and push our charges and offer a wide range of adventurous activities. From traditional Scouting activities to Morris dancing with visits from Hampshire Air Ambulance and a trip to the fire station to round off our community elements.

We have made some new friends over the last year with joint activities with 9th Winchester Beavers, who we have shared a couple of nights away events. We started 2019 with a Hobo Sleepover to raise money for the Society of St James and highlight homelessness issues. Tin foil parcel cooking was the order of dinner. They also constructed their sleeping enclosures from a mountain of donated cardboard boxes. Finally, with handmade instruments the Hobos regaled their parents with an impromptu busking session.

More recently we have enjoyed a two night camp at Ferny Croft as our first Damboree event of the year. Good wholesome Scouting activities including fire lighting, cooking twists, hiking and a roaring campfire singalong Echo Beavers are now the pre-emptive section for Nights Away activities with several events planned throughout the year. This is in major part due to Badger’s involvement with the Damboree initiative designed to get more Beaver leaders gaining their camping permits and getting as many Beavers out under canvas as possible. Also as County Nights Away Adviser, Badger is very busy on a much larger platform encouraging leaders out camping. While Beavers are currently the youngest section in Scouting, there are no restrictions to the activities they can participate in, so we try and broaden their experiences. #BeaversAreScouts_ScoutsCamp

We’re already planning further events, including our Second County Beaver Space camp in July and more joint activities with other Colonies.

Onwards and upwards..
